La Woe ancient historical and the age of prosperity

Before we move on any further let’s get the precise understanding over the word “Khmer”. Because majority of people get a wrong message that the word Khmer is to do with Khmer nationality. In actual fact, Khmer is a word which is used for calling culture, and civilization for people who have faith in either Hindu religion or Mahayana Buddhism, which is influenced from Hindu, which is different from Theravada Buddhism. Therefore, Khmer people in a correct manner mean people who have faith in Mahayanna Buddhism. Reason for people getting the wrong concept is because after people evacuated themselves from the Chao Pra Ya river, they turned themselves to respect Theravada Buddhism and only a small numbers of Khmer are left to respect Mahayana Buddhism.

Let’s get to know about La Woe or Lopburi. La Woe is in fact an old ancient city and is older than other cities that were established as a capital city in Thailand. Many of ancient historical sites have been connected with Mahayana Buddhism for a long period. For instance Phra Prang Kake , and Phra Prang Sam Yot.

La Woe Kingdom is believed to have been established between 557-657 with head quarters in the center of Lopburi. Before that the face of the city wasn’t clear, but statements that appeared after that clearly indicated that Lopburi received influence in civilization from the Khmer in terms of city plan, arts, and architecture. Today, there is still evidence remaining to be seen and Mahayana Buddhism is a religion where people in La Woe itself respect most. Some people also assumed that La Woe is the status of the second city of Khmer Kingdom.

The word of Khmer appeared in the Thai history from Sukholtai post no. 2 stone inscription which was found at Wat Sri Chom, Sukholtai province. Due to Cambodia’s bad defeats from La Woe city and taken over Sukholtai. Cambodia’s bad defeats rule Sukholtai for a very long period, Por Khun Bangg Klang How and Por Khun Pa Muang gathered his troops to fight against Cambodia’s bad defeats and overthrow their power gained. So called Sukholtai city was then established.

But relationship in building La Woe and a Thai history doesn’t end here, because after Sukholtai Kingdom, and La Woe being regarded as big city as it was before. Capital city was then moved down further to situate along the Chao Pra Ya river where 3 main river streams flow and come together at one point. The name of these rivers are Pa Sak , Chao Pra Ya , and Lopburi and started to call this city as “Ayoltthaya Sri Rama Thep Nakorn”.

The city of Ayoltthaya Sri Rama Thep Nakorn transformed itself to become Ayutthaya Kingdom and assumed that Phra Au Thong or, Sodej Phra Rama the 1st the first King of Ayutthaya originally came from La Woe. With this respect, His Majesty the King has played an important role in building the two capital cities in Thai history: Krung Sukholtai and Krung Sri Ayutthaya.

Once Krung Sri Ayutthaya Kingdom appeared, La Woe started to decline and became unstable. While, the Khmer civilization began to spread out and cover the majority of areas along the Chao Pra Ya river banks. People turned themselves to Theravada Buddhism until the period of  Somdej Phra Narai Maharaj, La Woe was renovated and came back to prosperity as the second capital city of the Ayutthaya Kingdom. The original city name was also changed to Lopburi. This was an important  period when architecture or original Khmer arts, inside La Woe city mixed with Ayutthaya arts. Evidence from temple renovations can still be observed even features of Ayutthaya arts exposure existence, but deep inside there is still a mixture of Khmer arts mixed up.
