From “Lawoe” to “Lopburi” middle land of a golden axe

“Lawoe” is an ancient city, comprising plentiful resources and situated in the middle land of a golden axe. Therefore, when it comes to its historical aspect Lawoe or Lopburi is second-to-none in terms of a long-standing history. The reason behind this, is because this kingdom was a very strong power base, even before the Sukhotai or Ayuttaya periods.

According to a text study passed from one generation to the next  Lawoe is an ancient kingdom active during the same period as the Sri Wichai Kingdom (Southern part of Thailand-in the centre of Nakhornsrithamaraj province) and was also active in the same period of Hiran Njeon Yang Kingdom (Northern part of Thailand-in the centre of Chiangrai province). The Lawoe Kingdom was probably established between 457-657 B.C. or 700 years before the Sukhotai period was established. The standard assumption by Pongsathust, stated that Pra Chao Kanwanandit, son of Pra Chao Krung Korm, was the person who built Lawoe. Lawoe being a Sanskrit word which means water and Lopburi means a city which has plenty of water.

The Lawoe Kingdom has therefore experienced peak periods as well as down periods over a very long period of time. At this time,  Architectural  influence in building the city and religion, came from the Khmer. Remains of the Mahayarn Buddhist religion remains to be seen from the ruins of the original construction, including the statue of the different Buddha images, which remain even today.

However, before it became the Lawoe Kingdom, archeological evidence from pieces and remains that have been discovered indicate that Lawoe experienced a prosperous period way back between 3,000 – 4,000 years ago, or before the Buddhist religion was discovered. In addition, human bones, accessories and weapons of the bronze age were also found at Ban Pong Manow, in Pattannikom district, Ban Kok Charoen, Kok Charoen district, along with an ancient city which was discovered at Sabb Jampa, Ta Luang district.

Strong evidence of a clear historical history is considered close enough to be able to tell what was happening in Thailand during that period. In which case, we need to refer to the Ayutthaya period. Phra Chao Au Thong (King Au Thong), Attila of Ayutthaya, appointed Lopburi as the second capital city. He also assigned Phra Rama Suan (his elder son) to reign over Lopburi. After the death of Phra Chao Au Thong, Phra Rama Suan took over and reigned in Ayutthaya. Within less than 1 year, Somdej Phra Boromracahatiraj 1 (Khun luang Phra Neow) an uncle of Phra Rama Suan, who reigned over Suphanburi, moved his troops close to Ayutthaya, resulting in Phra Rama Suan deciding to give up to the throne to Phra Ma Tula, and he himself, went back to reign over Lopburi.

As time went by, Somdej Phra Boromrachatiraj 1 died and 18 years later, in 1388, Phra Rama Suan moved his troops to Ayutthaya again and excuted Somdej Phra Chao Thongrun. The son of Phra Boromracharaj 1, who had reigned for just 7 days. At that time, he was only 15 years of age, and he himself, then went to reign over Ayutthaya for the second time.

The standard Pongsathust didn’t have much more to report about Lopburi after that, until the period of Somdej Phra Narai Maharaj (the 27th King of the Ayutthaya period). He established Lopburi as the second capital city in a period when Lopburi was one of the most prosperous cities ever. The King also built Vishnu Palace as a residence and died there in 1688. Today its status as a city of Phra Narai still exists and every February of each year, Lopburi people organize a grand festival to celebrate the reign of King Narai Maharaj. This festival is regarded as a very high quality National standard event.

Following the death of Somdej Phra Narai Maharaj, together with the down period of Ayutthaya, Lopburi was then no longer as important as it was before. So it remained, until King Rama the 4th, of the Ratanakosin period, established Lopburi as another royal residence. This meant that Lopburi came through a critical down period as well as a prosperous period over a long period of time.

A new age, during the government of Jompol Por Piboonsongkram, witnessed a Lopburi city plan being officially reorganized. A large number of military units were set up all over the region. Today, Lopburi is regarded as an Army city, with 11 military units standing tall. Many areas in Lopburi province, especially in the West, belong to the army, but still allow civilians to enter and make a living.

Today there are also Thai Puan or (Laos Puan), who originated in Laos and came to settle in Lopburi especially, around Amphur Ban Mee, where Thai Puan is their base. In a similar manner, Thai Puan people are now putting extra effort into preserving their local culture.
